Mornings can be a real struggle as we are not all morning people. But what we do in the morning can set the tone for the rest of our day. In order to look after our skin and keep it looking firm, supple and youthful there are a number of things that we need to put on our skin as well as in our bodies in order to ensure that this happens. It’s not as complex as it sounds I promise. Below are 10 beauty habits that should be included in your morning routine. Trust me, you’ll be thanking me later.
Whilst asleep your body is hard at work repairing itself to cast out the toxins that have built up. When you drink water first thing in the morning, these toxins will be flushed out of your body. Leaving you feeling energised and healthy. Not only will you eliminate toxins by drinking water first thing in the morning, but you will in addition be firing up your metabolism. Ensuring that you are well hydrated does wonders for your skin and energy levels as well as fuels your brain. It even curbs hunger. Now I’m not saying don’t eat breakfast, but sometimes we find ourselves over-eating or eating when not hungry. This could in fact just be thirst. So a tip for later in the day if you find yourself hungry: have some water first and then re-establish if you are still hungry 20 minutes later.
When I first heard of dry brushing I thought the notion to be outrageous. The thought of attacking my skin with bristles was daunting and off-putting to say the least. But having tried it I can say that my pre-conceived ideas of dry brushing were absurd and far- fetched.
If you don’t know what dry brushing is, let me fill you in. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and a 1/3 of toxins are secreted through the skin. Dry brushing aids by unclogging the pores and enables the toxins to be excreted. It is great for circulation and cellulite reduction. A dry brush without any liquid or soap is used on dry skin.
Here’s how to dry brush the right way.

The Jade Roller
Ancient rituals that have been practiced for centuries by Chinese royalty are all abuzz this year. It’s no wonder as this tiny magical gem has huge benefits. A jade roller is ideal to use in the morning as it increases circulation, de-puffs the eye area (yes please!) and promotes lymphatic drainage. Additionally it can even out your complexion. Top tip: place the roller in the fridge over night as it is better used cold. This is how you use a jade roller.
Shower and Moisturise
Showering every day is part of our personal hygiene. Unfortunately our skin and hair can be stripped of natural oils. Ensure you use a nourishing moisturiser or skin oil to lock in moisture. A word to the wise: end your shower with cold water. It’s great for circulation.
Applying an SPF before you dash out the door is essential. Many foundation or moisturisers now contain an SPF. If yours don’t then be sure to apply one daily. It’s better to be safe than sorry and ensure you do all you can to avoid skin cancer.
Whether it be at home, at the gym or a walk around the block, morning exercise is very good for you. There are various benefits to morning exercise which include: improving your metabolism; aid in setting a good routine; developing strong-self discipline; improve sleep and sets the tone for the rest of your day. Having worked out in the morning you are less likely to eat unhealthy later in the day as you have already exercised. You will be starting your day on a positive note.
Clear your bed
Now this is not necessarily something you will do on a daily basis, but it is definitely something that seems to slip our minds. Pillowcases are in direct contact with our skin some 6+ hours every night. An unclean pillowcase could lead to blemishes and breakouts. So ensure you change yours every other day in the morning. It won’t happen if you set the task for before bedtime.
Despite what you have heard, breakfast isn’t essential. But if you are going to eat breakfast then ensure that you feed your body the right foods. Everyone has a favourite when it comes to breakfast. Personally I love a smoothie or a bowl of oatmeal.
Foods high in protein are great for breakfast as they will leave you feeling fuller for longer. Think scrambled eggs ( or whichever way you prefer them),greek yoghurt or a tofu scramble.
Lots of fruit, healthy fats such as avocado, chia and flax seeds and vegetables are always a good option. If you simply do not have time to cook a full breakfast, then a smoothie is the way to go. A smoothie is the perfect way to incorporate nutritious foods all in one. Adding spinach or kale to your oatmeal doesn’t exactly sound very appealing. But adding kale, oatmeal, dates, apple and cinnamon to a smoothie? Winner!
Now this may not be your thing, but give it a go. Daily affirmations do wonders for your mental state and can leave you feeling happy and healthy as well as body confident.
