As with sushi rolling and arranging flowers, the ability to pack light when travelling is a true art form. The very thought of even where to begin when beginning to pack is an overwhelming one. Sure you want to be stylish and put together, but you really don’t need 10 pairs of shoes and a different outfit every day for those Instagram posts. You only need key pieces and everything else should be interchangeable to create new looks and outfits. You should also remember that clothes can be washed.
Who better to get advice from than those who are the worlds most experienced travellers. Flight attendants of course. Through their experiences and hundreds of flights, they have some very handy packing tips when it comes to trying to pack light. These flight attendant approved tips will make packing so much easier and allow you to have an amazing holiday not having to lug around a huge suitcase of clothes.
Maximise Suitcase Space
Packing can be quite a fine art. The never ending debate of whether to fold or roll your clothes? Roll them. Sorry folders. Another great way to get super organised and maximise space is to use packing cubes. Packing cubes are small square/rectangular zipped pouches that fit into your suitcase. They are very handy as they will keep your clothes organised and the rest of your clothes will not get wrinkled when you are living out of your suitcase and rummaging through your suitcase. Another great tip is to pack heavier items at the bottom of the suitcase. The bottom part where the wheels are. Flight attendants are known to pack toiletries and shoes at this end of the bag as it makes in-airport transit much easier.
Cut Down On Shoes
What most of us forget is that on most holidays there may be a great deal of walking involved. You therefore need really comfortable travel-friendly shoes. Shoes tend to take up a lot of space. And you can only wear one pair at a time so you don’t need too many pairs. Choose shoes that are versatile and can go with many of your outfits. Always pack flip-flops. They can be worn at your accommodation as house shoes, can be worn with dresses and pants and to the beach too. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes that can take you from day to night if needs be. The emphasis should be on comfortable as you will be exploring all the new sites in the city. Top tip: wear your bulkiest shoes to the airport and save that space in your suitcase for something else.
Always Pack ….
A swimsuit. If you live in colder climate then it would be nice to get a little colour. You never know, there may be a swimming pool or a jacuzzi. So packing a swimsuit is essential. It takes up so little space. Flight attendants always, always pack a pashmina. It can be used as a scarf, shawl or rolled up into a pillow on the plain. This is a good item to carry in your carry on.
The Best Suitcase For Travel
Don’t choose too big a bag! You will definitely fill it with clothes if your bag is too big and this just means paying more if you are over the allotted weight. Invest in a good suitcase and it will last you years. It is also a good idea to have a backpack or foldable bag. This will be very handy if the weather is cold and you have a lot to carry. You can just pop it in your backpack.
Packing Toiletries & Cosmetics
Toiletries can weigh a lot. It’s a good idea to decant the toiletries that you will be taking with you. If you are going to a nice hotel that has nice shampoo, conditioner etc then don’t pack any of those. Hotels also have hairdryers so you don’t ever need to pack one. When packing makeup only pack what you know you will use. You will be amazed at how you can whittle down your makeup stash. If you wear contacts then be sure to bring another set. Bring makeup wipes. This means you don’t have to carry liquid cleansers on flight. I still think makeup wipes don’t clean your face properly, so bring a small amount of cleanser for when you’ve reached your destination.
When packing electronics only take what you really need to. If you are travelling for fun then you could just take your phone as it can take great photos and can double as a book. If you need other items get the plug extender USB port so that you will only need cords and will not need to transport bulky plugs.
Airport food can be really expensive, and flight food isn’t always the best. Pack foods that won’t go off and that aren’t too smelly. No one wants to smell a stinky egg sandwich mid flight. Think picnic. Things like celery, carrots, hummus, olives, a pasta or quinoa salad would be good choices. Adding proteins and fats will also keep you fuller for longer.
Make A List
If you’re heading on a longer trip its a good idea to make a list. This way you will ensure that you have everything you need and that you won’t overpack as well!
