MORNING MINDFULNESS

Hello loves! Todays post is highlighting the importance of a self-care routine at the start of your day.  I am not writing this because I am an expert.  In fact, I am not what I would call a “morning person” to say the least.  I am writing this because I am learning what self-care means for me and through that discovery I now understand the importance of taking time for yourself in the morning.

There are days I literally crawl out of the covers and my mornings seem very rushed.  The next thing you know I am throwing on my shoes and out the door without ever eating breakfast.  I recently was given a promotion and my schedule changed to mornings.  So… to be perfectly honest I was not a morning person, but was somewhat forced to become one (which is perfectly okay with me since I love my new job!!!).  There was an adjustment period, but as I started to incorporate self-practice this is what I found:

1. I FEEL MORE PREPARED TO TAKE ON MY DAY

2. I AM MORE PRODUCTIVE

3. I FEEL MORE ENERGIZED

4. I NOW LOOK FORWARD TO MORNINGS!

Now that I have found something that works, I’d like to share it with all you lovely people!  My routine can be broken down into three categories:

MIND. BODY. SOUL.

First category is MIND!  There are so many decisions you have to make throughout the day.  Start your day out right by preparing your mind for the interactions and decisions you have to make that day.  Some ideas I came up with that fall under the mind category include:

-Read a self improvement novel

-Meditate for 10 minutes

-Work on a crossword puzzle or sudoku

-Words with friends ( or a trivia app, lumosity, etc.)

-Watch part of a Ted talk discussion on youtube

I usually incorporate this specific step of self-care while I eat breakfast, or if I meditate I do it first thing in the morning.

Second category is BODY! This portion can give you the energy you need to make it to the end of the day.  Here is what I came up with for Body:

-Stretch for 10 minutes

-Go on a brisk walk around the block (and if you have furry friends that love to walk, take them with you!)

-Try out different yoga poses for 20 minutes

-Fuel your body with a smoothie full of veggies & fruits

-Turn hot water on in the shower and let the room become steamy..Stand outside the shower and deeply inhale/exhale (the steam also has great benefits for your skin and lungs)

Last category is SOUL! I look at this as a time of reflection and a way to connect to your higher power, whatever that may be.  It can also be used as a time to connect with yourself and give thanks.  Here are some ideas for soul:

-Keeping a Gratitude journal

-Prayer

-Scripture reading

-Soul writing/ reflection journal

-Look in the mirror and compliment yourself

person-waking-up

These can be done in any order! By focusing on mind, body and soul, I have felt more balance during the early morning and on throughout the day!  I would love to hear what y’all are doing for self-care morning routines! Let me know in the comments or find me on Instagram: @the_modmaven or Facebook!

Peace & love,

Master These 11 Skills In Your 20’s And See Your Career Blossom

New to your chosen career or whether you’ve already been at it for a couple of years, it is never too early to work on career characteristics that will ultimately shape your future. The sooner you start the sooner you will get better at perfecting these skills and habits. Practice makes perfect after all. Mastering these skills and characteristics will set you in good stead in your future career.

Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone

No one ever achieved anything great by being comfortable. If you want to succeed then you will have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The early stages of your career is the perfect time to take risks. You have the time to make mistakes and to rebound. You should aim to step out of your comfort zone every day or at least on a weekly basis. You can do this by setting yourself goals. This could be anything from speaking up in a meeting you wouldn’t normally speak up in or approaching your boss with  a new idea.

Make Authentic Connections

We live in a time where our social and work status is defined by the number of followers we have on our social media accounts. While social media is an important aspect of our lives, and it is here to stay, it is vital to create real authentic human -to- human connections. It is important to build long term connections when networking. Keep in contact with your connections over lunch or send them articles that may be of use to them. You never know in the future where they might be able to help you with your career or you with theirs.

Always Be In Learning Mode

You are never too old to learn, and thus you should be in constant learning mode. Find someone who you strive to emulate. A person in your career field or someone at work whose work ethic and work you admire. Observe what they do and establish how they achieve this. Don’t be shy to ask for help and advice, for it will better your knowledge and help you to achieve your goals. The more you know the better equipped you will be for your future. It is also vital that you do not become complacent and that you are constantly striving to improve yourself.

Make The Most Of Your Sundays

Weekends are a great time to unwind, relax and spend time with friends and family. Sunday is still seen as 100% weekend time, and I get that, but by using 1-2 hours of your Sunday to organise your life will help you banish those Monday blues and gear up for a productive and successful week. Mondays get a bad rap as there’s always so much that needs to be achieved at the beginning of the week. Allow yourself to ease into the week by seeing part of Sunday as the start of your week. Meal prep, schedule workouts and view your weekly calendar so that you know what is scheduled for your week.

Once you have accomplished these tasks and have gotten into a routine, you can start by spending some extra time on career development goals. This could be anything from reading articles you haven’t yet managed to read to taking online free classes to improve your skills. As mentioned above, you should never stop learning.

Develop A Daily Routine

Research has shown that the most successful people follow a daily routine. You know yourself best and know your weaknesses, as well as when you have the most energy and are the most productive. Create a daily  routine that fits into your lifestyle so that you are able to reach your goals. Not only will having a daily routine make your life more organised, but you will also feel better and accomplish more in your day.

 Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate

In your 20’s you are still finding your feet and the very thought of having to negotiate can be rather overwhelming. Especially if your are more timid. But luckily you have some time to master this skill and alas, you should never shy away from negotiating.  The first thought that springs to mind when negotiation is mentioned is that of salary negotiation. Sure you will have to do your fair share of salary negotiations, but you will constantly need to negotiate in other spheres of your career as well. You will need to negotiate project terms, timelines and who is assigned what work. So it’s time to get comfortable with negotiating because its here to stay and will form part of your everyday life.

Manage Your Social Media

Social media is an integral part of our lives. We’re all rather obsessed with it actually and we spend hours pouring over our own and  new feed on Instagram . That being said, if not well maintained it could be detrimental to your personal brand. You should be aware of your privacy settings and always be considerate of what you are posting. In a couple of months or even years would you be happy with what you are posting? Ask yourself that each time before posting.

At the very least you should have a LinkedIn page as it is relevant in most industries. If you wanted to you could build your own personal brand by having your own personal site. This is a great way to display your achievements and competencies. Social media is a wonderful tool that can be amazing if used correctly.

Here’s how you can easily start your own site.

Update Your Resume

Most people forget to update their resumé on a regular basis. The problem with this is that when it comes time to update it as you need to use it, you may omit important details as you have forgotten. In the early stages of your career you may be unsure of the exact path you will take as there are endless options. Therefore it is essential that you keep your resume updated. You could even create more than one resume to highlight different skills and achievements that are more in line with the career path or job you may want to work in.

Be True To Yourself

This is very important in shaping yourself as an individual in the workplace. Yes you may be able to put on a good façade, but generally people will see through that. It is important to establish what career path you would like to follow. If your heart is not in it then you will most likely fail as you will not be 100 % invested. Your 20’s can be a difficult time as you are now an adult, but still figuring out what you want in life, who you are and where you want to go and what you want to achieve.

Dress To Impress

In order to get your dream job or be promoted, you need to look the part. You are constantly making first impressions in your 20’s so it is vital that that impression is a good one. Remember to always dress appropriately even if it is just drinks with your co-workers. It is still work related after all. Find a style that both suits you and makes you feel confident. Looking good will make you feel better and more confident in the workplace.

Don’t Compete With Others

Your sole focus should be to only compete with yourself, but this is often easier said than done. At the start of our career paths we are often left comparing ourselves, our income and progress to friends, family and co-workers. But in terms of career development, the best thing you can do for yourself is to focus on your progress and strive to be better each day, only competing against yourself.

MIA TOUR-A ROAD TRIP UNLIKE ANY OTHER.

chicken-car-ny

I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING…WHAT DOES A CHICKEN CAR IN NEW YORK CITY HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I’M WRITING ABOUT?

Well, if you have not heard already this unique set of wheels was driven around the country by three guys with the ambition to travel through 48 states in two months with the purpose of promoting mental health awareness.

Patrick Taylor, Alex Vassiliadis and Nate Perez met during college at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. It was through many conversations that this idea unfolded into a full fledged tour known as the Mental Illness Awareness Tour or MIA tour.  With each members personal connection to mental health they let two worlds collide and combined their dream of traveling the country with helping people along the way.  This road trip was a public forum for people to share their stories, connect those in need to accessible resources and discuss mental illness in a positive, yet transparent environment.

Pictured: Alex (left) Patrick  (middle) and Nate (right), Founders of the Mental Illness Awareness Tour

The following dialogue was from a Q & A session that I was fortunate enough to have with Patrick.  He discusses his own personal opinion on mental health and the   experiences he had during the tour.

Q: What does mental health look like to you?

A: “To me, mental wellness is like maintenance on a car. You use your mind every day all day, and need to remember to take time to maintain it. Or in terms of the car, getting an oil change. I think many people get caught up in their day to day activities and forget to reflect on themselves and ensuring that they are Operating at 100%. Taking only a few short minutes every day or two to reflect on your mental health is mental wellness. How you spend those couple of minutes is different for everyone, but it is worth exploring what helps you unwind to stay mentally well.”

Q: Why do you think it is important that we spread mental illness awareness?

A:  “I think it’s important to talk about mental illness to educate people. The average person does not know what resources are available to them, or how to react to a person having a mental breakdown, or how controlling mental illness is to the person suffering. Through education, we can make our communities more inclusive and understanding of the situation others endure with mental illness.”

Q: Top 3 cities you visited and why?

A: “1. Sandpoint, Idaho for glacier lake, mountains, and friendly welcoming people. 2. Philadelphia, PA for Pat’s cheesesteaks and the rocky impersonator. 3. New Orleans for the Cajun food!”

I think it is safe to say that these three guys (plus a chicken) are making a positive impact.  To date, they have raised over $21,000 and are happy to be donating whatever isn’t used to cover their costs back to mental health organizations that have helped them along the way.  The chicken car is currently traveling around Illinois and speaking at Mental Health events.

A little birdy told me to be ready for  Mental Illness Awareness tour 2017!  For more information or to help fund their cause, check out the MIA tour website: MIA Tour Like them on Facebook and continue to see their efforts as they prepare for their next tour.

Their story is a reminder that we are the ones that can help change the attitude surrounding mental illness. If you know someone who is struggling or have been struggling yourself, remember that it is okay to ask for the help that you not only may need, but deserve. Sending love to you all!

MUST HAVE SELF-CARE ITEMS THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK!

Ladies & gents, let’s talk about self-care!

When was the last time you invested in yourself?

If you had to think about that for more than 30 seconds….it is time my friends for some beautiful, soulful, self-care chat.

Listed below are my favorite items that personally have been positive towards my self-care regime. They are sure to leave you and your wallet happy!  Enjoy!

1. FOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN

IMG_6685

Engaging in “thinking games” such as sukoku or crosswords can melt the stress away and help you stay in the present moment by focusing on what’s in front of you.  It also supports mental stimulation, which is just as important as physical exercise.  You can find puzzle books for under five dollars, it’s a win win for everyone.

2.  AROMATIC SENSES

IMG_6675

Our brain associates different scents with certain emotions and some fragrances in particular have physical & psychological benefits.  Aromas including lavender, vanilla, camomile, and peppermint are known to aid in relaxation.  Try lighting a candle while you get ready for bed or as you read a book!  I also recommend shutting the lights off to have a few minutes to unwind and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.   Pictured is the Mahogany teakwood candle from White Barn.  It is my absolute favorite, but obviously go with what appeals to your senses!

3.  GET YOUR JAM ON.

IMG_6674

As well as being creative and mentally stimulating, learning how to play a musical instrument  can help you master the skills of patience and concentration.  In some cases it can actually be a social experience for some people if they choose to play in a group setting.  Once you learn, you can have the pleasure of taking time to enjoy making music.  This ukulele was a saving grace.  I purchased it for 27 dollars on amazon, and since then have delved into more YouTube tutorials then I care to admit, but it was all worth it!  When I am stressed or feeling weighed down, I take an hour to myself and either play songs that I’ve learned or try to add a new song to my growing set list.  Whether its a ukulele or a bagpipe, get your jam on.

4.  THE FACIAL FACTOR

IMG_6684

Great facial care is a great way to treat yourself.  The mask on the left is a charcoal based mask from Origins that opens and cleans your pores.  I recommend wrapping your face with a hot towel first and then apply this mask, after 10 minutes wash with warm water.  Hello new found glow and clean skin!  My other favorite that I use once a week is the LUSH Mask of Magnanimity.  This china clay mask with fresh peppermint exfoliates and gets my skin feeling squeaky clean.  The ingredients are all natural and don’t leave that harsh feeling on your skin afterwards.  Both of these I highly recommend and both products are under twenty dollars.  There are so many facial masks out there so don’t be afraid to dabble with other brands, just remember to look at the ingredients! The more natural and fresh the ingredients, the better it will be for your skin!

5. WHEN IN DOUBT, FOAM ROLL IT OUT.

IMG_6690

Meet my best friend.  Honestly, purchasing a foam roller was one of the better choices I have made in my 24 years of existence.  I bought this beauty from WalMart for under twenty dollars.  Essentially after each workout your muscles tighten, the foam roller breaks down adhesions and scar tissue in your muscles and connective tissue.  I use it before and after every gym sesh and have noticed a tremendous difference in how I feel the day after an intense workout.  Obviously it is not a quick fix for serious injuries, but it is a great way to prevent an injury by taking care of your muscle and connective tissue.  It rolls the unwanted stress away both literally and figuratively.

10 Steps To The Perfect Manicure At Home

Having a manicure can really help you feel put -together. I know that once I have my nails done it instantly perks me up and makes me look like I actually put some effort into how I look. Getting your nails done is therapeutic, but on the other hand can be quite pricy. Especially if you are paying for gel and other extras. If you are looking to save money then going for your bi-monthly manicure is definitely something that you will have to bid farewell to. But not to fret, you can easily achieve an amazing manicure at home for a fraction of the cost. Here are 10 steps to the perfect manicure at home.

Step 1- Essential Tools For Getting The Perfect Manicure At Home

In order to get the best manicure possible at home, you will need some essential tools. They do not have to be the most expensive on the market and you can head to your local pharmacy or beauty store to find many of these products. It is easiest to have a designated pouch or cosmetic bag for them so that they are always together and easy to find. This is what you will need:

  • Nail Clippers
  • Nail polish remover
  • Cotton pads/ wool and ear buds
  • Emery board and nail file
  • Cuticle pusher and nippers
  • Callous/ cuticle remover
  • Hand/nail moisturiser
  • Base coat
  • Nail polish
  • Top coat
  • Any other products or items you may need if using gel.

Step 2-Remove

Now that you have all of the products and bits and bobs, it is time to remove any nail polish you currently have on your nails. There is a big debate between whether you should be using acetone or acetone -free nail polish remover. As with all products there are of course negative and positive attributes to both. Acetone-free nail polish removers are much gentler than acetone based products, but you will require more product to remove the nail polish and it may take longer . Acetone nail polish works much faster than acetone-free nail polish, but acetone nail polish removers are harsh and more unforgiving on the skin. Both are not ideal for the skin, but the decision is purely an individual one.

Step 3- Shape

With clean nails it is now time to shape your nails. I personally do not like to cut my nails, and prefer to file them down and then shape them. But do whatever works best for you. Round or square the nails out at a desired length that works for you. Avoid extremely course nail files as this will just cause damage.  Instead opt for a slightly abrasive emery board. Use a slightly abrasive buffer on the side and top of the nails. This will create an even surface. Do be cautious though as too smooth a surface can mean that the nail polish can literally just slide off!

Step 4- Soak

Take a moment to relax and immerse your hands in look warm water for 3 minutes. It is important that the cuticles are  soft before trimming as it will make the process easier. But do not soak for too long as this could be detrimental. Limit the soaking time to 3 minutes. For an extra pamper you could add some of your gentle face cleanser to the water.

Source: Giorgadze on Unsplash

Step 5- Cuticle remover

In order to soften the cuticle and the thick skin around the nail it is vital that you use a cuticle remover as it will make the process a whole lot easier…and less painful!

Step 6- Remove Cuticles

Gently push the cuticle back from the nail by using the cuticle pusher in your kit. Be sure to do this gently as pushing too  hard could damage the cuticle and hinder future nail growth. Be sure not to pull, lift or tear away at the cuticle. Only remove excess edges. It is best to under-do it here than over -do it as the cuticle has to protect the nail. Without it you could run into some serious problems.

Step 7- Moisturise

Use your favourite hand cream or oil to massage into your nails and hands.  Spend some time massaging your hands. It will help you relax and there are various pressure points on the hands that can positively impact you body when pressed.

Step 8- Nail polish Prep

Having absorbed the necessary moisture from the cream, it is time to remove any excess moisture from the nails. Any residue left will hinder the nail polishes ability to “stick” to your nails. Use a cotton pad and rub some nail polish remover over your nails. With clean dry nails you are now ready to move on to the next step.

Step 9- Paint

This step is probably the trickiest of all the steps. I personally find painting my nails quite difficult. Painting with your left hand ?! There are various tricks and tips that you should try when painting your nails as to ensure that you are able to emulate that nail salon look. Firstly, do not forget to fist apply a base coat. Not only will this help to strengthen the nail. but it will also help to protect the nail from staining. I can’t tell you how many times I have forgotten to apply a base coat when painting my nails black. Needless to say, it took ages to fully remove the nail polish when I wanted to apply a new colour.Agh! Base coat on, apply the nail polish in layers. Many people  make the mistake of applying too much nail polish at once. This just leads to a big mess and you never wanting to paint your own nails ever again. With a small amount of polish on the tip of the brush, start in the middle of your nail and work from there. Once all your nails are painted allow this layer to dry. Then apply your second layer. Once this layer is dry apply the final layer, the top coat.Be patient and allow each layer to dry fully. Doing otherwise will leave you with a less than satisfactory mani.

*Top tip: In order to ensure that your manicure lasts longer and has that salon look, take a few minutes every other day to top up with a coating of top coat.

Step 10- Moisturise

Finish off with reapplying some moisturiser. Moisturiser is essential in healthy looking hands and nails.

12 Things To Do If You Hate Your Job

Featured image: Pinterest

Header image: The Balance

“Find something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I’m sure you have heard this many times  before.  This is often easier said than done though. Especially if you hate your job.  Sunday rolls around and you’re left feeling depressed and irritable because you know you need to wake up early tomorrow morning and go to a job that you absolutely detest. You live each moment waiting for the end of the work day and for Friday. Frankly put, you hate your job more than seeing manky feet in sandals in summer. And that is a lot of hate!

So what now? Do you muster up all the will-power you have and grin and bear it, because, you know ,you have bills to pay, or do you look elsewhere for greener pastures?

Well it will all depend on whether you are going to stay or leave. Here are 12 things you can do if you hate your job……despite which category you fall into.

If You Have To Stay

Leaving a job on a whim is not advised, especially in todays job market. You may be new to the job and haven’t settled in yet, or you simply just don’t have anything else lined up yet.Whatever the reason, if you do decide to stay at your job then there are many things that you can do to make the environment more tolerable.

1.Establish What You Hate About Your Job

Stating that you hate your job, “just because”, is not a valid reason. You’re no longer a child where that response will fly, so figure out exactly what it is that you hate about your job. Are you bored? Do you hate your co-workers? Whatever it is you need to figure out what it is that you hate about your job so that you can improve your work situation. You have after all decided to stay at your job for the present time.

2. Have Friends At Work

Just because you don’t like your job doesn’t mean that you have to hate your co-workers. Making friends at work can make the experience that much more tolerable and enjoyable. You may be able to bond over mutual hobbies or the fact that you are both new at the  same workplace. Whatever it is, grab some lunch or go for after work drinks with colleagues. You will feel much better about making friends at work and you will be networking at the same time. Who knows when this could come in handy….. maybe when you decide to leave said workplace.

3. Approach Your Boss

The reason you may hate your job is perhaps because you are bored or working in the wrong department. Approach your boss and ask to expand your skill-set and knowledge by working on various projects and potentially in different departments. You might even reignite your passion for your job and it is vital that you learn as much from the job experience as possible whilst you are there.

4. Set Goals

As you have decided to stay at your job, that does not mean that you can half-ass your job. You need to be giving of your best at all times.  Working towards goals will make you feel better about your job and take your focus off of how much you detest going to work every day. Instead, focus on achieving goals. This may be to receive a raise, be voted as best employee or simply receive a great recommendation from your boss. A good way to ensure that you achieve your goals is to be constantly reminded by them. This could be in the form of a vision board or simply logging your goals in your bullet journal.

5. Start A Side Hustle

Unfortunately not all work will excite you and make you feel as though it’s not work. There are bills to pay and for now you are staying. But if you have a passion and would like to eventually pursue your own business, there is no reason not to start your side hustle whilst still working. If it ignites something inside you and you could really see your future in it, then it’s worth it. Bare in mind that working full time and starting a side hustle will be very tiring and time-consuming, but it will be worth it. It is great to start a side hustle whilst still working to ensure that it will work and you can generate an income from it before deciding to leave your job.  Personally I feel that it is really important to do something that makes you happy. I think that we should all be following our dreams and fulfilling them, instead of working for others and helping them realise theirs. That’s just my perspective on being your own boss.

6. Positivity Is Key

The mind is very powerful, and staying positive will make your job that much easier. If you go in to work and moan all day long then your job will be that much more difficult. In addition you will really irritate people around you. No one wants to be friends with  Negative Nancy. It is natural that you will not love everything about your job, but there certainly must be a few aspects that you enjoy? Find those and focus on them.

7. Know That You Are Not Alone

Chances are, many of  your co-workers hate their job too. But don’t go around announcing to the world that you hate your job. Instead find comfort in the fact that you are not alone and that what irks you at work will most likely be others’ pet-peeve too.

Essential Skills You Need If You Want Your Own Business

Things Successful Business Woman Do

If You Are Leaving

Firstly, good for you! This is a very big step that you are taking and you are to be commended. Leaving a job is daunting and creates a great deal of uncertainty and stress during this period of time in your life. Therefore be sure to take head of the below mentioned advice.

8. Know Where You Are Going

Now that you have decided to leave, you should have a back-up plan. Ideally you would like to have a job lined up before handing in your resignation. This will make the transition from one job to another much smoother. Leaving your current job without another lined up is very risky. You don’t exactly want to have to use your savings, and being unemployed is not fun.

9. Continue To Be A Model Employee

So even though you know that you are leaving, you still want to want to produce stellar work. By slacking off, arriving at work late and not giving of your best will only be to your detriment. You will need to get a recommendation letter when leaving, and poor performance and behaviour will only negatively affect your future. So give 150% till your very last day!

10. Zip Your Lips

I know you’re probably close with Carol from accounting, but word to the wise, she’s a gossip queen and your news will spread like wildfire within the day.  If your boss hears that you are planning to leave and you have not yet handed in your resignation letter, you could be in for a tough time. Sure you will start looking for jobs and going for interviews, but there’s no need to announce how said interview went.  You want to remain professional at all times.

11. Know Your Strengths & List Your Achievements

Whilst you probably haven’t updated your cv in a while, now is a good time to do so. Before you apply for new jobs be sure to update your cv with all your strengths, your current job achievements and how these said achievements will aid you in your future job.

12. Never Close A Door
